The family came to look on Gregor's corpse, then went into their parents' chamber to weep for their loss. When the boarders complained about breakfast not being ready, their father commanded them to leave immediately. The cleaning lady leaves soon afterwards.

For the first time since Gregor's metamorphosis, the family is free to leave the apartment together. They took a trolley to the outskirts of the country. It was a warm, sunny day.

Mr. and Mrs. Samsa watched their daughter, and remarked upon how much she had grown. It was perhaps time for her to find a husband.

prediction: What happened with Gregor might come back to haunt them later on in life.

Log #9

pages read: 51-54

characters introduced:
none

three important events:
After the boarders declared that they would leave, the family decided that they could not longer keep Gregor with them. He had to be gotten rid of. Their reasoning was that if the bug were actually Gregor, he would have gone away on his own accord long ago, to spare his family of the burden.

Gregor heard all of this from his room, and agreed with them. That night he died, with thoughts of love and affection for his family.

The next morning the cleaning lady came in and discovered Gregor's corpse.

prediction: With Gregor gone, the family can start a new life.

Log #8

pages read: 45-50

characters introduced: three boarders

three important events:

The new cleaning lady had taken to calling Gregor names like "dung beetle" and the sort. Meanwhile, the family has taken in three boarders who are oppressive and demanding. Because of this, it became necessary to move a lot of the excess furniture into Gregor's room, in order to make room for the boarders. Gregor has not been eating his meals.

One night, the boarders heard Grete playing violin in the kitchen. They were impressed, and invited her to give them a concert. Gregor heard her play, and was deeply moved. In a dazed state, he came out into the parlour, and was spotted by the boarders.

Upon seeing Gregor, they declared that they would leave the next day. The family had not told them about Gregor. They also said that they would not be paying the due rent.

prediction: The family's situation is getting worse. They might take it out on Gregor, because it was his fault that the boarders left.

Log #7

pages read: 40-44

characters introduced: cleaning woman

three important events:

Gregor had now been suffering from the wound for over a month. No one dared to remove it. It seemed to have reminded the family that Gregor was still their son. They swallowed their disgust and continued to endure him.

All three of Gregor's mother, father, and sister had jobs now. They worked constantly; his father practically lived in his uniform. No one had time to properly take care of Gregor. Sometimes Gregor spent days and nights with almost no sleep at all. His sister hurriedly shoved bits of food through his door every morning, and took it away in the evening without checking to see whether he'd ate it or not.

The family got into an argument about who should clean Gregor's room and his mother and sister started crying. Tears had been frequently shed by the women of the household as of late.

The family got a new cleaning lady who saw Gregor one day, but wasn't all that startled by him.

prediction: The injury and neglect might be slowly killing him.

Log #6

pages read: 33-39

characters introduced: none

three important events:

Gregor soon realized that he did not, in fact, want his furniture to be moved. They were the last relics of his human past. All his belongings were in the drawers and cabinets. He wanted his things in his room to remind him of the person he used to be. So, he tried saving a painting that was on the wall by crawling over it.

His mother came in and, upon seeing Gregor in full view, fainted. When his sister arrived at the scene, she said to him angrily, "You, Gregor!". This was the first time that someone had addressed him directly since his metamorphosis. He followed her to the other room to fetch medicine for their mother.

By following her, Gregor only succeeded in startling his sister. When she got the medicine, she went into the room where her mother was, and slammed the door on Gregor. Gregor then started anxiously crawling all over the place, until he collapsed, unconscious, on the table.

When he woke up, his father returned. His father had regained his erect posture from working again. He chased Gregor around the room and started throwing apples at him. One of them got stuck in Gregor's back, and he blacked out.

prediction: That apple does not look good for Gregor. I doubt anyone will do anything about it.

Log #5

pages read: 27-32

characters introduced: none

three important events:

Before all this happened, Gregor was the sole breadwinner of the family. He was the closest with his sister, who had a gift for playing the violin. It was his wish to send his sister to the Conservatory to study music, no matter the cost. It had been his plan to announce this on Christmas Eve.

Despite the fact that his sister was taking care of him, she still couldn't bear the sight of him. To make things easier for her, he took four hours to arrange the blanket so that it completely covered him when he was underneath the sofa. Also, every time she entered his room, she had to first open the window wide.

One day, while his mother and sister were visiting him, his sister decided to move all the heavy furniture from his room. This was so that he may crawl more freely on the walls and ceiling.

prediction: Something is about to happen; the author wouldn't have the two women move the furniture for no plot-related reason, and then just go back to the mundane day-in day-out routine of feeding and Gregor dwelling in his thoughts. This break from routine might be the inciting force to an impending climax of some sort.

Log #4

pages read: 21-26

characters introduced: new maid

three important events:

Gregor woke up to find a basin of milk by the door. He tried it and was repulsed by it, even though milk used to be his favourite drink.

The next morning, his sister (Grete) came to retrieve the milk. When she saw him, she cried out in shock and fled the room. Later on, when she had recovered her composure, she went in with an assortment of fresh and rotten foods for him. He only ate the rotten foods. He was fed twice everyday, his sister brought him the food while he hid underneath the sofa.

It turned out that the maid had left on the first day, and had been replaced by someone else.

Gregor discovers through occasional snatches of conversation that his family's financial situation is steadily declining. Everyone is saving money where they can, and they've resorted to the left-over money from his father's business which collapsed five years ago.

prediction: Eventually, Gregor's family is going to do something about him. The alienation may soon turn into hostility.
