Everyone was shocked to see what had become of Gregor; his mother fainted, his father started weeping, and his manager let out a surprised "Oh!".

The manager had begun to make his way out, but Gregor wanted to plead his case, as his job was the main source of income for his family. He started moving towards his manager, but that resulted in scaring him away.

His father then took his cane and drove Gregor back into his room. Gregor injured himself while getting through the door.

prediction: Gregor's life is going to be very different now. I wonder what he'll eat and do in his spare time.

Gregor's manager came to Gregor's house and berated him because he failed to show up for work.

After trying to defend himself from his manager, Gregor discovered that no one could understand his speech.

Everyone was urging him to come out of his room. He succeeded in opening his door after much effort.

prediction: His manager probably won't want him at work anymore, once he realizes the state Gregor's in.

Being unaccustomed to his new body, he could not immediately get out of bed. This made his family anxious and worried because he would not (could not) open his door.

He then experimented and became more aware of his new insect body
